I generally recommend a consultation with your medical doctor if you are starting psychotherapy. Purposes are at least twofold. One is to assess if your issues are medically based. As an example, sometimes anxiety may not just be an emotionally based issue. There is an array of medical conditions that will give you heart palpitations similar to anxiety. Second, sometimes a medication may be necessitated to effectively treat certain mental health conditions. However, in the long run, optimal mental health is the desired goal of psychotherapy with the least amount of chemical treatment. Talk therapy, like medication is capable of changing brain chemistry. This change supports healthy life changes. Psychotherapy helps you become in charge of your life. Psychotherapy is not designed to just suppress symptoms. Together, with your physician you can decide what is the best integration of therapy with or without medication to accomplish your goals.
